Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu recognise the diaspora’s contributions and encourage wider participation in Independence Day observances
Massachusetts has declared August 15 as India Day, recognising the contribution of the Indian-American community to the state and encouraging residents to participate in celebrations marking India’s Independence Day.
Governor Maura Healey issued the proclamation on August 1, while Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also issued a separate proclamation designating August 15 as India Day in the city. The move comes ahead of India’s 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2026.
Healey’s proclamation highlighted the role of Indian-American residents in Massachusetts in areas including medicine, science, technology, education, business and public service. It also acknowledged community organisations and advocates for promoting civic engagement, cultural exchange and greater understanding through annual Independence Day events and community service initiatives.
The proclamation noted that more than 36 million people of Indian origin live outside India, making the Indian diaspora one of the largest in the world. It also said more than five million people of Indian origin live in the United States and contribute significantly to the country’s social, economic and civic life.

She also welcomed the opening of India’s new consulate in Boston and highlighted the visit of INS Sudarshini as part of the SAILBOSTON-250 celebrations.
The Massachusetts proclamation described India’s Independence in 1947 as a historic event that laid the foundation for the world’s largest democracy. It also acknowledged India’s cultural and linguistic diversity and the continued efforts of the Indian-American community in Massachusetts to celebrate its heritage and democratic values.
The declarations by the governor and Boston mayor provide official recognition of India’s Independence Day while highlighting the growing civic, cultural and economic presence of Indian-Americans in Massachusetts.
