Cultural programme highlights Mahatma Gandhi’s values of peace and non-violence, while more than 350 students take part in competitions
The Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) in Doha marked the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with a programme featuring tributes, cultural performances and student activities on October 2.
The event, held at the ICC’s Ashoka Hall under the aegis of the Embassy of India in Qatar, brought together community representatives and dignitaries to remember Gandhi and his contribution to India’s freedom struggle.
ICC General Secretary Abraham K Joseph welcomed the gathering, while Head of HR, Administration and Consular Rakesh Wagh delivered the opening remarks. Indian Ambassador to Qatar Dr K Srikar Reddy, the chief guest, spoke about Gandhi’s teachings and their continuing relevance.
First Secretary at the Indian Embassy Ashwani Kumar attended as the guest of honour. ICC President Manikantan AP, in his presidential address, recalled Gandhi’s role in India’s independence movement and his message of peace and non-violence.
A special ghazal performance by Padmakumar, a Hindustani and ghazal singer, was among the highlights of the evening
The ICC also used the occasion to engage students from Indian schools in Qatar through educational and creative competitions focused on Gandhi, Indian history and the freedom struggle.
An inter-school quiz for students of Grades 8 to 12 drew participation from 14 schools. Birla Public School won the first prize, followed by Olive International School and DPS Modern Indian School.
More than 350 students also participated in sketching and painting competitions organised at Bhavans Public School. The competitions were held for different age groups, with winners receiving trophies and mementoes during the Gandhi Jayanti programme.
The celebrations reflected the ICC’s wider role in promoting Indian cultural and community activities in Qatar. The centre operates under the patronage of the Embassy of India and regularly organises cultural, educational and social programmes for the Indian community.
