Ireland is emerging as an increasingly attractive destination for Indian students seeking higher education abroad, with rising costs and changing immigration policies in traditional destinations prompting many to consider alternatives.

Data from Ireland’s Higher Education Authority shows that 44,535 non-Irish-domiciled students enrolled in higher education in 2024-25, up 10.2 per cent from the previous year. Indian students formed the largest international group, numbering about 9,175, or 20.6 per cent of the total.

The number represents a sharp increase from just over 2,000 Indian students in 2017-18. Enrolments rose to more than 4,000 in 2021-22 and reached 7,070 in 2023-24 before climbing further last year.

  • One of Ireland’s main advantages is that English is the primary language of instruction

  • This removes a major barrier for students who might otherwise consider countries such as Germany or the Netherlands, where language requirements can influence academic and employment choices

The duration of postgraduate courses is another factor. Many master’s programmes in Ireland can be completed in one year, reducing overall education and living costs compared with longer programmes elsewhere in Europe.

Post-study employment opportunities are also influencing decisions. Indian students interviewed by The Indian Express cited Ireland’s technology, pharmaceutical and management sectors, as well as opportunities to remain in the country after graduation.

Pune-based education consultants are reporting a similar trend. They said demand is particularly strong for technology, pharmaceuticals and management courses, with Ireland’s growing technology sector adding to its appeal.

The shift comes as the wider overseas education market becomes more cost- and career-conscious. Recent industry research shows Indian students are increasingly prioritising career outcomes, affordability and visa certainty when selecting international study destinations.

For Ireland, the growing Indian student population signals a strengthening education and migration link with India, even as students increasingly assess overseas study through the lens of employment prospects and long-term value.
