MPs want resumption of international flights

The committee members have asked the Civil Aviation Ministry to restart scheduled international passenger flights since quite a few countries had opened borders

Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture have shown their concern over the high cost of international air travel. The committee members have asked the Civil Aviation Ministry to restart scheduled international passenger flights since quite a few countries had opened borders, according to reports sent out by PTI.

International flights that had been stopped due to the pandemic on March 23 has now been extended till November 30. Special international flights, however, have been operating under the Vande Bharat Mission since May 2020 and under bilateral “air bubble” arrangements with 28 countries since July 2020.

The MPs also asked them on what basis the number of international flights to be allowed to one specific country was decided as the demand for international travel was on the rise

Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal, the Director General of Civil Aviation and the Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) deposed before the parliamentary panel last Friday. Some panel members questioned them about high prices of international flights, and food and beverage not being served in domestic flights of a duration less than two hours, according to sources.

As for resumption of international flights, the aviation officials said they would look into the matter. The MPs also asked them on what basis the number of international flights to be allowed to one specific country was decided as the demand for international travel was on the rise.
