NCW calls for awareness on NRI marital issues

Rekha Sharma, NCW chairman, called for awareness among women and proper co-ordination between investigating agencies in India and abroad to resolve the issues related to marriages

The National Commission for Women (NCW) registered as many as 5,858 cases related to NRI marriages by the end of 2021.

This was stated by the NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma at a recent seminar in Telangana. The seminar was organised by Telangana Women Safety Wing (WSW).

Addressing the seminar Rekha Sharma called for awareness among women and proper co-ordination between investigating agencies in India and abroad to resolve the issues related to marriages.

“More awareness should be created among women about rules in India and abroad before getting married to an NRI. Officials must conduct awareness programmes in educational institutions to caution women about NRI marital issues,” she said.

She cited examples of cheating cases and asked women to be alert and informed about them before entering into marriage with NRIs.

Chairperson of State Commission for Women (SCW), V Sunitha Laxma Reddy, admitted to have received 15 complaints related to NRI marital issues. “With the coordination of various wings including the WSW, the SCW was trying to resolve the cases and render justice to women,” she said.
