Overall, the partnership marks a step towards more seamless air travel between India and Europe, offering passengers better connectivity, smoother transfers, and greater value for money
Air India and the Lufthansa Group have strengthened their partnership through a new memorandum of understanding, promising better flight connections between India and Europe. The move is expected to make travel easier for tourists, business travellers, and students by offering more routes, smoother connections, and the convenience of booking multiple airlines on a single ticket.
The partnership brings together Air India with Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, and Air India Express. Together, these airlines already offer codeshare services on 145 routes linking 15 Indian cities with 29 cities across Europe, covering 20 countries. Popular European destinations include Frankfurt, Zurich, Vienna, Milan, and Brussels.
-
For passengers, the biggest benefit is convenience
-
Travellers can now book one itinerary across partner airlines, reducing the need for separate tickets and the risk of missed connections
-
Frequent flyers will also benefit from integrated loyalty programmes, allowing them to earn and redeem miles across the partner carriers
The expanded network is expected to support growing demand for travel between India and Europe, driven by tourism, business ties, and student mobility. Improved connections will make it easier for Indian business travellers to reach major European economic centres, while tourists will enjoy more flexible and affordable options to explore key destinations in Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and beyond.
For Air India, the agreement supports its strategy to expand its global reach without launching many new routes, while Lufthansa Group sees India as a fast-growing aviation market with strong future potential.
