Hari Kiran Senagana, a 25-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh, tragically drowned while swimming at Illgen Falls, near Lake Superior in Silver Bay, Minnesota, on July 4.

A native of Chikkala, East Godavari, Hari had moved to the United States on a student visa and was pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Central Missouri (UCM). He was also working part-time to support himself financially, reported gujaratsamachar.com.

While enjoying a day out at a scenic waterfall with friends, Hari was suddenly swept away by a powerful current. Despite rescue efforts, he could not be saved.

  • A fundraiser has been launched to help his family with the cost of repatriating his body to India, which is reportedly very high

  • “Every contribution, big or small, will make a difference,” said the fundraiser’s appeal

Hari’s death is the latest in a troubling pattern involving Indian students abroad. In March 2025, Sudiksha Konanki, another Indian student, drowned during a holiday in the Dominican Republic. In February 2024, four Indian nationals, including two siblings, drowned at Forrest Caves beach in Newhaven, Australia, after getting caught in a strong tide.
