Anna University announces substantial reduction in tuition fees for NRI students

In a significant development, Anna University’s syndicate, during its meeting on January 3, has decided to implement a noteworthy reduction in tuition fees for non-resident Indian (NRI) students, as reported by thehindu.com. The decision, effective from the upcoming academic year, aims to address longstanding concerns and criticisms surrounding the admission process under the NRI quota.

Anna University, in its commitment to equitable educational opportunities, has allocated 5% of the total sanctioned strength to the NRI category within each branch of B.E., B.Tech., and B.Plan programs. These reserved seats are supernumerary, as outlined in the university’s prospectus for the academic year 2023-24. Notably, in the B.Arch program, 5% of seats are allotted within the sanctioned strength for NRI candidates.

Previously, the university faced criticism over the admission process under the NRI quota, with concerns ranging from lack of transparency about reduced seat availability to more serious allegations of professors accepting bribes to favor certain NRI students.

Addressing the recent fee reduction, University Vice-Chancellor R. Velraj specified that the adjustment applies to “non-popular branches,” excluding computer science engineering, information technology, and electronics and communication engineering. This strategic move aims to make quality education more accessible and affordable for a wider range of NRI students.

The university, comprising four prominent departments—College of Engineering, Guindy; Madras Institute of Technology; Alagappa College of Technology; and the School of Architecture and Planning—extends the revised fee structure to NRI admissions within these institutions.

In addition to the fee reduction, efforts to streamline and fortify the admission process for the NRI category have been emphasized, according to an official from the self-financing colleges consortium.
