ASEAN member states join India’s National Cancer Grid Meeting to strengthen cancer care collaboration

The recent collaboration between ASEAN and India underlines the potential for shared healthcare strategies across borders, advancing a resilient, integrated healthcare system in the region

In a significant move towards enhancing cancer care and collaboration in Asia, ASEAN member states joined the Annual National Cancer Grid Meeting in Mumbai, India, from November 6 to 8, 2024. This event aligns with the 10-point plan proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 21st ASEAN-India Summit in Vientiane, Lao PDR, aimed at strengthening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Organized by Tata Memorial Hospital in cooperation with India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the meeting showcased India’s commitment to advancing regional healthcare collaboration.

Nineteen cancer specialists and policymakers from ASEAN countries, along with a representative from the ASEAN Secretariat’s Health Division, participated in the meeting. The event provided ASEAN member states with valuable insights into India’s National Cancer Grid (NCG), focusing on standardized cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care practices.

  • The international dimension of the NCG, known as “NCG Vishwam,” was inaugurated in 2019 at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference in Vienna

  • This global component extends NCG resources and expertise to partner countries, addressing cancer care disparities worldwide

  • By sharing India’s best practices and resources, NCG Vishwam supports international efforts to reduce cancer’s impact on public health

This partnership allows ASEAN nations to draw from India’s expertise in cancer care and strengthen their own healthcare systems, fostering resilience within the sector.

India’s National Cancer Grid, an initiative of the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), was launched in 2012 to establish consistent cancer care standards across the country. Now a vast network of over 300 cancer centers, research institutes, patient advocacy groups, charitable organizations, and professional societies, the NCG plays a pivotal role in India’s cancer care ecosystem.
