Donors have been invited to kick off the 2024 US presidential election campaign. Among the invitees to an event, which is being seen as the first strategy meet for Biden’s 2024 re-election bid, was Indian American Ajay Jain Bhutoria, a Silicon Valley based entrepreneur and Democratic Party deputy national finance chair.

“The Biden Victory Fund and the Biden-Harris National Finance committee will be hard-pressed for time and so they will advise loyal Democrats and administration supporters to donate through an online link,” Dinesh Sastry, a California based political and business strategist and fundraiser for the Democrats, who has been appointed to the victory fund and Biden/Harris NFC,” told the Times of India.

A series of events about fundamental issues such as voting rights and women’s right to choose their own healthcare were being planned as part of the Democratic fund-raising programme.

“Large and small events featuring President Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff are being planned which will include photo opportunities for large donors,” Sastry said.

The Democratic Party is, reportedly, targeting to raise $2 billion during the presidential campaign through the fundraising efforts.

“I will reach out to law firms, Indian-American business owners, IT professionals, and cultural groups who believe in the Biden-Harris vision of freedom, tolerance and inclusion rather than the Republican vision of hatred, bigotry, intolerance and gun worship,” Sastry, whose father was one of the founders of the Livermore Shiva Vishnu Hindu Temple in Silicon Valley, said.

Some of the prominent Indian American Democrat fund-raisers are Silicon Valley entrepreneur Vish Akella; community leaders Swadesh Chatterjee and Shekar Narasimhan and investor Deepak Raj.

Bhutoria had played an important role in raising funds for Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

“In the past, for President Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama and Vice President Al Gore; there were many Indian Americans active behind the scenes in fundraising.

Now with President Biden, more Indian Americans are in the limelight as prominent faces in the administration,” Sastry said.

He added that he had been recruited to the fund-raising team so that he can bring in more Indian Americans to join the Democratic presidential campaign.

He had raised funds for Biden from 2003 to 2005, and was on Kamala Harris’ finance committee in 2020.
