Police say the gang exploited the victim’s grief after his wife’s death, luring him with false promises of remarriage and property deals
The Jagraon police on Sunday arrested three accused, including local BJP leader Raman Arora, for allegedly duping a Canada-based NRI of ₹6.14 crore in 2020. The other two arrested have been identified as Charanjit Singh Sarna and Manjit Singh. All three were produced before a local court and remanded to police custody for three days, reported hindustantimes.com.
The victim, a 68-year-old NRI, was cheated through a well-planned racket involving fake marriage proposals and land deals.
According to the complaint, the victim, Baloura Singh, had lost his wife in 2020 and was allegedly targeted by the gang during his vulnerable phase.

The accused first introduced him to a woman under the guise of arranging a second marriage

Once trust was established, they began persuading him to invest in land purchases and lucrative property deals in Punjab, eventually siphoning off crores of rupees
During raids, police recovered ₹2.20 crore in cash and ₹10 lakh in deposits from Sarna’s residence, along with records of ₹25 lakh deposited in a current account. With these arrests, the total number of accused held in the case has now risen to nine. Earlier, six others, including Ranjeet Singh Rana, who posed as a fake lawyer, were taken into custody.
ASI Gurdeep Singh, the investigating officer, said an FIR was registered on August 28 under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including extortion, cheating, forgery, use of forged documents, criminal conspiracy, and intimidation. He added that it was a well-orchestrated fraud targeting a grieving NRI, and more arrests and financial recoveries are likely as the investigation continues.
