The fantasy adventure film Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, which was directed by Ayan Mukerji and stars Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhat in key roles, is setting records at the box office.

Brahmastra has now made history by being the first Indian movie to earn more than $1.56 million at the Australian box office. It has exceeded George Miller’s fantasy movie, Three Thousand Years of Longing, and the love story, After Ever Happy, two major foreign box office successes in Australia.

“We’re at the point as an industry where we want to create big-screen entertainment that becomes popular in the world in the way that indian food is popular in the world.”

— Ayan Mukerji

Ayan Mukerji, the film’s director, praised Australia for the movie’s success in a statement to The Sydney Morning Herald: “I was very happy. Wonderfully, it felt. It was a major Marvel film remade in indian style. It was made with the intention of being a mainstream, pop culture movie. It’s not like our independent film just appeared at the top of the box office.”

“We’re at the point as an industry where we want to create big-screen entertainment that becomes popular in the world in the way that indian food is popular in the world,” added Mukerji, who has previously directed just two movies, Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, both of which also starred Ranbir Kapoor in lead roles, reported indiaherald.com.
