Canada expands express entry categories for 2025 to address labour shortages

New education category introduced to attract skilled workers and meet long-term workforce needs

Canada will implement major changes to its Express Entry system in 2025 to combat rising labour shortages across key industries. The Canadian government emphasized that immigration remains essential to supporting the country’s economic growth and meeting the increasing demand for workers , reported gujaratsamachar.com.

This new category aims to grant permanent residency to individuals who have prior work experience in Canada while also inviting qualified workers from other countries. The reform is part of a broader effort to address gaps in the labour market and secure a sustainable workforce.

Earlier this year, Canada announced a 10% reduction in study permit visas, limiting the number of permits to 437,000 in 2025. This decision reflects a shift in immigration policy following concerns about rising population pressures.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in March, had previously committed to reducing immigration levels. Public sentiment toward immigration has cooled, prompting the government to reassess its policies. In 2023, Canada issued over 650,000 study permits, bringing the total number of international students in the country to over one million—nearly three times the figure from a decade ago.
