Canadian authorities have requested the extradition of 35-year-old Maninder Singh Dhaliwal, an Indian-origin individual believed to be leading a criminal organization responsible for a series of extortions in Edmonton, Alberta. Dhaliwal was arrested in the United Arab Emirates in late 2024 on separate criminal charges, prompting the request for his extradition to Canada, reported hindustantimes.com.

Edmonton police investigated 40 incidents linked to extortion, with no new reports since July 2024

In July 2024, six individuals were arrested in connection with the extortion investigation, including Jashandeep Kaur, Gurkaran Singh, Manav Heer, Parminder Singh, Divnoor Asht, and a 17-year-old male. The group faces a total of 54 charges, including extortion, arson, assault with a weapon, and firearms-related offences.

The investigation has been an extensive effort for Edmonton police, involving international coordination. Inspector Duane Hunter from the EPS Organized Crime Branch emphasized the international reach of this operation, sending a strong message that no border would protect criminals from justice.

Since the last reported arson on July 26, 2024, no new incidents have been linked to the extortion operation. Authorities suspect Dhaliwal was directing the criminal activities from India, and Canadian officials have been in contact with Indian authorities as part of their ongoing investigation.
