Carl Pei sparks debate with bold claim on Indian food

Nothing CEO’s hot take comparing Indian food in London vs India sets social media abuzz

A post on X (formerly Twitter) by Carl Pei, CEO and co-founder of London-based consumer tech brand ‘Nothing, stirred up a social media storm after he posting a controversial opinion that “Indian food in London tastes better than Indian food in India,” reported gujaratsamachar.com.

Pei’s comment on Indian cuisine prompted mixed reactions—some agreeing, others defending India’s diverse and authentic food culture.

  • The post drew strong reactions from users around the globe

  • Some asked for London food recommendations, while others sharply disagreed with his view

  • “Bukhara in New Delhi is better than anything you find in London,” said one user

  • Another argued, “There’s nothing Indian about Indian food in London.”

A user mocked Pei, saying, “Because the only food you try in India is at Soho House.” Pei responded light-heartedly, revealing that the best Indian food he had in India was a roadside biryani.

One netizen schooled the Nothing CEO with a breakdown of India’s culinary complexity:
“Indian Food 101 – There is nothing called Indian food:

  • ~8–10 cuisines based on region
  • ~25–30 cuisines based on state
  • 100+ cuisines based on community, religion, and seasonal produce.”

This isn’t Pei’s first India-related commentary. Back in February 2024, he humorously suggested Elon Musk change his name to “Elon Bhai” to secure a Tesla factory in India. Pei had even changed his own display name to “Carl Bhai” during that time.

The Elon Bhai tweet drew over 800,000 views and 12,000 likes. One user quipped, “Elon bro is so popular in India, if he contests elections from India, his win is sure shot guaranteed,” while another chimed in, “You are the Bhai, he will be the Mamu.”

As for the Indian food debate—whether it’s London curry houses or India’s streetside biryani stalls—it seems the internet is far from reaching a consensus.
