The government has been able to bring back 710 of the 740 medical students from Telangana who were studying in Ukraine, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday, March 15,  announced that his government was ready to financially support Telangana students who returned from Ukraine in the wake of the ongoing war.

The government has been able to bring back 710 of the 740 medical students from Telangana who were studying in Ukraine, he added.

Now that the war is continuing, what will happen to their future? So, I want to say that the state government is ready to ensure they continue their education here. We will bear the expenditure so that they don’t have to discontinue or spoil their future,” the chief minister said.

Meanwhile, Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed Parliament on Tuesday, March 15, that over 22,000 Indian citizens have returned home safely from war-torn Ukraine despite the challenges posed.

He added that a large number of students elected to stay back despite several advisories.

The Union Minister reiterated “We launched the most challenging evacuation exercises amid an ongoing conflict. “Students hail from 35 states/UTs of India with over 1000 students each from Kerala, UP, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bihar and Rajasthan”.

He added that than half the students were in universities in eastern Ukraine that borders Russia and has been epicentre of conflict so far.

Under the union government’s evacuation mission ‘Operation Ganga’, 90 flights have been operated thus far out of which 76 were civilian flights and 14 were Indian Air Force flights.

Ukraine is the 11th most favoured destination for Indian aspirants wanting to study abroad.

Indian students numbering about 18,000 make the largest group out of the nearly 76,000 foreign students studying in Ukraine, mainly in medical courses, according to official estimates.

In percentage terms, the number of students studying abroad saw a contraction of 56 per cent in the pandemic year (2020) when compared to 2019.

While it costs a lot to study MBBS abroad, in countries like Ukraine, with living expenses, an MBBS course for five and a half to six years does not cost more than Rs 35 lakh to Rs 40 lakh. By comparison, the fee for a management quota seat in India is fixed at Rs 30-70 lakh.

Additionally, only 20,000 seats are reserved for the management quota in private institutes and the fees are exorbitant. Many find it tough to pay the more than Rs 1 crore to complete the MBBS course.
