Cold wave conditions in North India to further intensify

The IMD predicted abatement of cold wave, cold day and dense fog conditions over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan on Thursday. Minimum temperatures were in the range of 7-10 degrees Celsius over many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Delhi.

 

New Delhi: Cold wave conditions across many parts of  India northwest may further intensify from New Year’s Eve, IMD sources have predicted, a report in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says

On Thursday, Deccember 29, Gulmarg received snow under the influence of western disturbances while some parts of Punjab and Chandigarh had light rain.

The IMD predicted abatement of cold wave, cold day and dense fog conditions over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan on Thursday. Minimum temperatures were in the range of 7-10 degrees Celsius over many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Delhi.

Dense fog conditions are expected to intensify in Punjab and Haryana on Friday while very dense fog conditions are expected in Punjab on Saturday.

The India Meteorological Department, IMD, has forecast severe cold wave conditions in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, north Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during next 24 hours.

Cold wave conditions continue to grip Kashmir as the temperature dropped by a couple of degrees across the Valley to push the minimum temperature further below freezing point

Due to the intense cold, water supply lines in several areas have frozen. The interiors of Dal Lake and several other water bodies in the Valley also froze, officials said.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar settled at minus 4.8 degrees Celsius — down from minus 3.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, the officials said. Pahalgam, which serves as a base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a low of minus 6.7 degrees Celsius, down from minus 5.7 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature in the ski-resort town of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district was minus 5.9 degrees Celsius. In the frontier Kupwara district, the minumum temperature settled at minus 4.8 degrees Celsius while Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley, recorded 3.6 degrees Celsius, the officials said.

Meanwhile, residents of the national capital are experiencing biting cold condition. The Maximum temperature was on Thursday recorded at 16.2 degree Celsius, five degree below normal, while the Minimum temperature settled at 5.3 degree celsius which is three degree below normal.
