A Mohali court has acquitted Kharar resident Naveendeep Singh of charges of rape and criminal intimidation filed by a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) woman. The court observed that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt in the matter registered in 2023, reported tribuneindia.com.

Prosecution could not establish charges of rape, financial exploitation, or threats

The complainant, an NRI woman with two sons from a previous marriage, alleged that after her divorce in 2014, she met Singh in 2016 at Chandigarh’s Mobile Market. She claimed Singh assured her of marriage and subsequently entered into a live-in relationship with her at a flat in Jalvayu Tower, Kharar. During this period, she alleged, Singh established physical relations on the pretext of marriage, exploited her financially, and compelled her to give him ₹2 lakh for a car and scooter.

The woman alleged that when she pressed for marriage, Singh evaded the topic and later threatened to release her obscene photos and videos on social media

Court finds lack of evidence, defence argues false implication

Defence counsel Yoginder Nagpal contended that Singh was falsely implicated and no financial transaction was ever made to him. The court, while pronouncing the judgment, held:

“The prosecution has failed to prove the guilt of the accused for the commission of said offences. Accordingly, all the points for determination stand decided against the prosecution and in favour of the accused.”

With this ruling, Singh was acquitted of all charges, bringing the case to a close.
