Covid 3rd wave ready to knock on our doors; Don’t allow Kanwar Yatra: IMA to Uttarakhand CM

As a precautionary measure to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, in a letter to CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, IMA state secretary Amit Khanna asked him to not allow the proposed Kanwar Yatra to go ahead.

The people paid a heavy price as after the first wave they took their guard off, the IMA state secretary said, that eventually led to a stronger and more fatal second wave.

Hence in view of a possible third wave of Covid-19, the Indian Medical Association’s Uttarakhand unit on Tuesday urged Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to cancel the Kanwar Yatra this year.

The fortnight-long yatra, which takes place in the month of Shravan (around July 25) and goes on till the first week of August. Last year too, the yatra had been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic

In fact it has come to light that the Uttarakhand government has ordered the District Magistrate, in tourist places on weekends, to take decisions related to crowd control.

“The District Magistrate will be responsible If the situation worsens in the tourist places,” the state government’s order stated.

Crores of kanwariyas from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh gather in Haridwar to collect the holy waters of the Ganga. The fortnight-long yatra, which takes place in the month of Shravan (around July 25) and goes on till the first week of August.

Last year too, the yatra had been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
