Elon Musk reacts to Bill Clinton’s praise for Indian-Origin NYC Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani

Tesla CEO posts cryptic emoji in response to Clinton’s support for Democratic socialist Mamdani

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stirred conversation online with a subtle yet telling reaction to former US President Bill Clinton’s congratulatory message for Zohran K. Mamdani, the Indian-origin Democratic socialist who recently won the Democratic primary for New York City Mayor.

Clinton took to X (formerly Twitter) to commend Mamdani for his victory and wished him well ahead of the November 2025 mayoral election, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

“Congratulations @ZohranKMamdani on your victory in yesterday’s primary election and a well-run campaign. I’m wishing you much success in November and beyond as you work to bring New Yorkers together to tackle the city’s challenges and shape a stronger, fairer future,” Clinton posted.

Musk’s emoji-laden response hints at skepticism or surprise over Clinton’s endorsement of a progressive, grassroots candidate like Mamdani

Shortly after, Musk replied with a ‘’ (thinking face) emoji, a response many interpreted as surprise, doubt, or subtle criticism. Musk, who has distanced himself from overt political affiliations since stepping down from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has previously voiced concerns about the Democratic Party’s shift toward progressive politics.

Who is Zohran K. Mamdani?

Mamdani, 33, is a New York State Assembly member representing parts of Astoria and Long Island City in Queens. Born in Kampala, Uganda, he moved to New York at age 7 and later graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and Bowdoin College with a degree in Africana Studies. Prior to his political career, he worked as a housing counselor and briefly released rap music under the name Young Cardamom.

His political platform focuses on affordable housing, tenant rights, and economic justice, rooted in his organizing background. His win reflects the growing momentum of Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates in local politics.

Mamdani’s grassroots rise, especially in a district where nearly 25% of residents spend over half their income on rent, contrasts with Clinton’s legacy of centrist governance. Musk’s cryptic response may be seen as commentary on this generational and ideological divide within the Democratic Party.

As the 2025 mayoral race draws closer, Mamdani’s candidacy is expected to draw both progressive enthusiasm and establishment scrutiny, especially with figures like Clinton publicly endorsing him.
