Kolkata becomes first Indian city to experience Etihad’s next-generation narrow-body aircraft with wide-body comfort
Etihad Airways has launched its Airbus A321LR on the Abu Dhabi–Kolkata route, delivering a premium travel experience with wide-body comfort on a narrow-body aircraft. Effective 26 September 2025, all flights between Zayed International Airport (AUH) and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) will operate with the new aircraft, marking a significant upgrade for the route, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
The inaugural flight EY222, which landed in Kolkata at 8:35 PM on 24 September, was sold out, showcasing strong passenger interest. Part of Etihad’s fleet renewal plan, the A321LR is designed to provide wide-body-level amenities on medium-haul routes. First class features private suites with sliding doors, fully-flat beds, 20-inch 4K touchscreens, and exclusive dining. Business class offers 14 lie-flat seats in a 1-1 herringbone layout with premium furnishings, while Economy boasts 144 ergonomic seats with 13.3-inch 4K screens, USB ports, high-speed Wi-Fi, and enlarged overhead bins.
The A321LR offers First, Business, and Economy cabins with enhanced privacy, technology, and comfort, redefining medium-haul travel for passengers
Etihad’s Kolkata route investment underlines India’s strategic importance. Operating 183 weekly flights across 11 Indian cities, the airline facilitates connectivity to the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and North America. Kolkata, a key gateway in eastern India, sees over 135,000 passengers annually between Abu Dhabi and the city. The upgraded service is expected to attract corporate travelers, students, visiting friends and relatives (VFR), inbound tourists, and passengers connecting internationally via Abu Dhabi.
Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways, said, “India is a key market for Etihad, and we’re proud to welcome our newest aircraft, the A321LR, on its inaugural flight to India. Whether choosing our First Suites, Business Class, or next-gen Economy, our guests will enjoy a superior flying experience in Etihad’s signature style.”
With wide-body comfort in a narrow-body shell, premium cabins, high-end technology, fuel efficiency, and consistent service, the A321LR sets a new benchmark for medium-haul flights. Kolkata’s debut underscores Etihad Airways’ long-term commitment to India, blending innovation with customer-centric service across all classes.
