India and Australia engage in key discussions on Antarctic cooperation
The first India-Australia Senior Officials’ Consultation (SOC) on Antarctica was held virtually on 13 February 2025.
The consultation was led by Paramita Tripathi, Joint Secretary, Oceania and Indo-Pacific Divisions, Ministry of External Affairs, from the Indian side, and Adam McCarthy, Chief Counsel and First Assistant Secretary, Legal Division, along with Sarah Storey, First Assistant Secretary, South and Central Asia Division, from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, representing Australia.
Strengthening India-Australia cooperation on Antarctic research and policy
The discussions covered a broad range of topics, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation on Antarctic governance, environmental conservation, and scientific research.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the Antarctic Treaty System and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in scientific exploration and sustainable management of the region.
The SOC also saw participation from representatives of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, and the Australian Antarctic Division, Government of Australia. This engagement marks a significant step towards enhancing scientific and diplomatic collaboration between the two nations in the polar region.
