India and Malaysia deepen ties through strategic dialogue on security, defence, and maritime cooperation
The inaugural India-Malaysia Security Dialogue, held on January 7, 2025, in New Delhi, marked a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between the two nations.
Strengthening Bilateral Security Cooperation
The dialogue was co-chaired by Shri Ajit Doval, National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister of India, and Raja Dato Nushirwan Bin Zainal Abidin, Director General of Malaysia’s National Security Council. Discussions focused on global and regional security dynamics, with both nations agreeing to deepen cooperation in counter-terrorism, cyber security, maritime security, and defence industries.
Additionally, they explored opportunities to enhance collaboration in critical minerals and rare earths. An annual institutionalized dialogue was agreed upon to ensure continuous engagement.
Outcome of Elevated Bilateral Ties
The security dialogue stems from the visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim to India in August 2024, during which India-Malaysia ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This partnership has paved the way for stronger bilateral security cooperation, further solidifying relations between the two nations.
