Floods, wildfires threaten Italy

In stark contrast to rains, wildfires threaten agriculture and nature reserves in southern Italy already in the grip of drought.

 

 

Both torrential rains that have caused landslides and scorching weather leading to fires, threaten normal life in Italy.

Expert predict wheat yields could fall by 10 per cent, while fruits such as cherries, peaches and nectarines could drop up to 50 per cent at some places, as compared to yields in an ordinary year.

Agency reports say two vehicles were smashed by a landslide in South Tyrol on Sunday, but there   were no reports of any damage to life or property. no injuries were reported on Sunday. This follows heavy downpours with a day, almost 87 litres in a day inundating car parks and roads in the northern parts of the province.

Weather and metro sources had warned of heavy rains.
