FOOTBALL: Clinical Real Madrid survives Stamford Bridge, punches ticket to Semifinals

Real Madrid beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to clinch their spot in the UEFA Champions League Semifinals, granting themselves another top-4 finish, their 11th in the last 13 seasons. Despite starting on the back foot, the Spaniards persisted through the English onslaught. They managed to turn the tide around with a Rodrygo brace in the second half of the tie, putting the defending champions 4-0 up on aggregate and sealing their spot in the semis.

The biggest talking point of the game was Chelsea’s lack of a centre forward across both legs in the tie. With 17 shots, 6 on target, the English side was more than capable of holding their own. With over £600m spent in the Transfer Market over the past year, the glaring mistake of not purchasing a CF has once again let the English side down.

Despite the spotlight being on Chelsea’s poor management, the defending champions lived up to their legacy, with clinical precision. The Ancelotti-led side brilliantly absorbed the pressure in the first half of the game, and delivered a one-two knockout punch in the second half. With 9 shots taken and 6 on target, the Spaniards have punched their ticket to face the winner of Manchester City/Bayern Munich.
