Raj Mishra, a 37-year-old Indian-origin politician and son of a farmer from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, has been elected as the new mayor of Wellingborough, a historic market town in Northamptonshire, England. Representing the Conservative Party, Mishra won the local council seat from Victoria Ward on May 6 and was officially appointed mayor at the town council’s annual meeting, reported indiatoday.in.
Mishra has pledged to foster an inclusive, vibrant, and community-driven Wellingborough, marking a significant milestone in his journey from rural India to British public office.
Expressing gratitude upon his election, Mishra said, “It is an honour to serve as the mayor of Wellingborough. Back in his hometown of Mirzapur, the news of his achievement was met with celebration, with locals viewing it as a moment of pride and inspiration for the youth. Mishra credits his success to values of integrity, accessibility, and listening to community voices. “Understanding the unique needs of our area, I am committed to supporting initiatives that bring positive change,” he stated.
As mayor, Mishra will preside over council meetings, represent Wellingborough at official events, and strengthen the link between the local government and its people. He also announced support for two local charities — the Veterans Community Network and Louisa Gregory’s Hospice Campaign — as part of his 2025–26 term.
