Food has always been a powerful expression of culture, and the latest global food city rankings for 2025–26 reaffirm this belief. Among 18,000-plus cities assessed worldwide, Mumbai has secured an impressive fifth position in the list of the world’s top 10 food destinations, standing tall alongside legendary culinary capitals of Europe and South America. Notably, Italy dominates the rankings with six cities in the top 10, but it is Mumbai that brings Indian flavours to the global spotlight.

Unlike European cities celebrated for culinary minimalism and rigid authenticity, Mumbai thrives on diversity, affordability, and bold flavours. The city’s street food culture is its biggest strength, offering a sensory experience that is both democratic and deeply rooted in everyday life. From the humble yet iconic Vada Pav—often called India’s answer to the burger—to Pav Bhaji, Bhelpuri, Ragda Pattice and festive Modaks, Mumbai’s food reflects its fast pace, multicultural population, and resilient spirit. These dishes are not just meals; they are shared experiences that cut across class and community.

  • For India, Mumbai’s ranking is not just a win for the city, but a reminder that the country’s everyday flavours have a rightful place on the world’s culinary map

Italy’s strong presence on the list highlights a contrasting philosophy of food. Naples, famed as the birthplace of the UNESCO-protected Margherita pizza, celebrates simplicity through ingredients like tomatoes, mozzarella, and fresh seafood. Bologna, known as Italy’s gastronomic capital, elevates comfort food with classics such as tagliatelle al ragù and tortellini in brodo. Milan blends tradition with luxury, boasting hundreds of gourmet producers and Michelin-starred restaurants, while Florence and Genoa showcase rustic, peasant-style cooking built around just a few high-quality ingredients.

Beyond Italy, Paris continues to charm the culinary world with its baguettes, patisserie, and an unmatched concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants. Vienna’s historic café culture and imperial desserts add elegance to the list, while Rome’s peasant-rooted cuisine proves that simplicity can be timeless. Lima, the only South American city in the top tier, represents a vibrant fusion of indigenous and global influences, earning acclaim with dishes like ceviche and lomo saltado.
