The upcoming Gangaur festival, slated for April 20, 2024, at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia, is set to be a jubilant celebration intertwining the rich tapestry of Rajasthani traditions with the warmth of Melbourne’s lively Jewish community. Organized by the Rajasthan Kutumb of Victoria (RAJKOV), this year’s festivities promise a unique blend of Hindu customs, Jewish hospitality, and the melodic talents of Muslim performers, epitomizing a narrative of unity that transcends cultural boundaries.

Gangaur holds deep roots in Rajasthan’s cultural ethos, dedicated to honoring Goddess Gauri as a symbol of purity, virtue, and devotion. However, this year’s event aims to extend beyond cultural celebration, fostering stronger ties between Rajasthan associations in Australia and New Zealand. The Rajasthan Association of New Zealand is poised to join the festivities, marking a significant milestone in the preservation and promotion of Rajasthani heritage across borders.

Reema Sharma, chairperson and founder of the Rajasthan Association of New Zealand, expressed her enthusiasm for this collaborative endeavor, highlighting the growth of their association since its inception in 2022. She emphasized the importance of this invitation from the Australian counterpart, citing it as a valuable learning opportunity for both associations.

The festival’s lineup boasts performances by esteemed artists Batool Begam and Anwar Hussain, renowned for their mastery of Rajasthani folk music. Batool Begam, breaking barriers as the sole female Maand singer, serves as an inspiration for aspiring female artists, while Anwar Hussain’s innovative fusion of traditional and contemporary melodies adds a dynamic flair to the event.

Gangaur 2024 serves as more than a cultural showcase; it’s a platform for dialogue, understanding, and empowerment. By hosting the event in Caulfield, renowned for its strong Jewish heritage, and featuring pioneering Muslim artists, RAJKOV aims to promote messages of peace, cooperation, and gender equality, fostering a sense of inclusivity and harmony.

Reflecting on the significance of the festival, Reema Sharma highlighted the recent Gangaur Pooja held in New Zealand, underscoring its role in revitalizing Rajasthani culture among communities abroad. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the upcoming pooja in Australia, emphasizing the importance of these cultural exchanges in preserving heritage.

Moreover, in a testament to their commitment, the Rajasthan Kutumb of Victoria and Rajasthan Association of New Zealand have inked a Memorandum of Understanding, pledging mutual support in promoting Rajasthan’s culture, language, and heritage.
