Germany is a growing hub for NRI students seeking quality education

Germany’s aging population and declining workforce drive the nation’s proactive approach to attracting international talent

Germany is increasingly becoming a preferred destination for higher education among Non-Resident Indian (NRI) students. With its renowned public universities offering a wide range of programs, Germany attracts students from around the world, especially those interested in high-quality education without the high tuition fees common in many other countries.

According to Rakesh Kumar, Head of Marketing & Recruitments at German International College, Germany presents a unique opportunity for students to pursue Bachelor’s, Master’s, and even PhD programs across diverse fields. “Most German public universities offer tuition-free education to international students as well, although some programs require German language proficiency,” Kumar explains.

Broad Program Choices with a STEM Focus

Germany is globally acclaimed for its Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs. German universities closely collaborate with local industries, tailoring courses to meet workforce demands and contribute to the country’s economic growth. “English-taught programs are limited, but German-taught programs are available across all disciplines, from sciences to the arts,” Kumar notes, adding that proficiency in German can enhance career prospects for students aiming to work in the country post-graduation.

Kumar advises prospective students to consider learning German, as many programs require a minimum language level, especially those taught exclusively in German. “For German-taught programs, students need skills at TestDAF 16 points, Hochschule C1, or Goethe C1 level. Knowing German can also ease the transition for students who aim to settle in Germany after their studies,” he emphasizes.

  • By offering free education to global students, Germany aims to nurture a skilled workforce that supports its economy

  • For those interested in long-term residency, the job market offers pathways to permanent residency (PR) and, eventually, citizenship

English-Taught Programs and the Importance of German Language Skills

English-taught degree options are available, but often require students to meet language requirements, such as an overall IELTS score of 6 to 7. However, Kumar still encourages students to learn German even if their program is in English. “Knowing the language facilitates integration with local students and helps students find internships, which often lead to full-time jobs,” he explains.

Lifestyle, Living Costs, and Part-Time Work Opportunities

For international students, Germany’s living costs average around €11,900 per year. Students need to open a blocked account with a German bank, allowing them to access approximately €950 monthly for living expenses. Public transportation is generally free for students, thanks to semester tickets covering local and regional transit. Additionally, students can work up to 20 hours per week, enabling them to manage a significant portion of their living expenses.

Germany’s Approach to International Recruitment and Residency

“In recent developments, it’s become easier for skilled workers to enter Germany and secure PR within approximately 24 months, with citizenship eligibility in about five years, depending on factors like job stability and language skills,” Kumar says.
