Cab driver attacked with bottle in Dublin suburb; Indian Embassy issues safety advisory amid rising racist incidents
Another Indian-origin man has reportedly been assaulted in Dublin, sparking renewed concerns over the safety of the Indian community in Ireland. The latest victim, Lakhvir Singh, a cab driver who has lived in the country for over 10 years, was allegedly struck on the head with a bottle by two passengers, who then shouted, “Go back to your own country, reported gujaratsamachar.com.”
The victim suffered deep wounds and required 12 stitches after the unprovoked assault in Dublin’s Poppintree area
Singh was attacked while dropping off two young men at the Poppintree Community and Sports Centre. Following the incident, he was taken to Beaumont Hospital for treatment. Singh said his children are now fearful for his safety and have asked him to stop driving taxis altogether.
The attack comes just over two weeks after another Indian man in his 40s was beaten by a group in a possible hate crime in Tallaght, Dublin, on July 19. The Indian community has voiced growing concern over the rise in such incidents.
In response, the Embassy of India in Ireland has issued an advisory urging Indian nationals to remain cautious, avoid deserted areas during odd hours, and take reasonable precautions for personal safety. The Embassy also confirmed it is in touch with Irish authorities regarding these attacks.
