Jaishankar emphasizes the government’s commitment to protecting Indians worldwide
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar assured Indians living abroad that the Indian government is fully committed to safeguarding their interests and providing support in times of need. Speaking to the Indian community in Dublin, Ireland, he highlighted the government’s proactive approach to protecting citizens and enhancing India’s global reputation, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Jaishankar says the government will stand by every Indian living abroad
“We want today’s Indians going abroad—whether they are tourists, students, professionals, or residents—to have the confidence that the government thinks about you and has your back. If you are in a jam, we are there. This is not just a statement—it is a commitment backed by a system built on technology and structured action,” Jaishankar said during his address on Friday.
He also stressed that India’s global image has improved in recent years, not only for defending its own interests but also for supporting other nations in times of need.
Jaishankar defends India’s image amid opposition protests
His remarks come against the backdrop of recent opposition protests criticizing the government over the treatment of illegal Indian deportees who were returned from the US in handcuffs. Opposition parties raised slogans such as “Indians insulted. India won’t stay silent.”
In response, Jaishankar highlighted India’s positive global image, stating, “When people think of India, they don’t just look at a map—they remember the people they meet and the experiences they share. This is what truly defines our image on the world stage.”
Strengthening India-Ireland ties through shared history
Jaishankar also reflected on the historical and cultural ties between India and Ireland. He noted that both nations share a history of overcoming colonialism and preserving their cultural identity.
“Ireland, in many ways, was an exception during colonial times because it was itself occupied. We have always had a special connection. There is much to learn from how the Irish revived their culture despite the challenges of colonization,” he added.
The visit included official meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, as well as cultural engagements to deepen the historical bond between the two countries.
