Growing bureaucratic challenges for the 32-million-strong Indian diaspora

As India strengthens engagement with its overseas population through initiatives such as diaspora events and investment programs, analysts say simplifying administrative processes could help deepen ties with the global Indian community

With more than 32 million people of Indian origin living overseas, administrative and documentation challenges remain a persistent issue for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders.

Common problems include managing documentation related to OCI cards, visa renewals, taxation, and property ownership in India.

Many diaspora members must navigate multiple bureaucratic systems across countries while maintaining legal status or investments in India

Legal experts say the complexity often increases when individuals change citizenship, relocate to new countries, or attempt to access Indian government services remotely. For second-generation diaspora members, understanding eligibility for OCI cards or citizenship pathways can also be confusing.
