In an extraordinary and rare case, a 24-year-old Gujarat man convicted of murdering his fiancée in the United Kingdom has been extradited to India to complete his life sentence. Jigu Sorthi, originally from Surat, was living in the UK in 2020 when he committed the horrific crime, reported gujaratsamachar.com.

A Murder That Shocked Two Nations

Sorthi stabbed his fiancée, Bhavini Pravin, four times at her home in Leicester, resulting in her tragic death. After serving four years in a British prison, he requested a transfer to Surat’s Lajpore Jail to serve the remainder of his life sentence. The Leicester court approved the transfer, and Sorthi was escorted to Delhi airport, where a special Gujarat Police team received him and transported him safely to Surat.

A Relationship Marred by Tragedy

The couple had plans to live together in 2017, but Bhavini’s parents were opposed to their relationship and tried to dissuade her. Over time, this led to tension and a rift between the couple, culminating in Bhavini calling off their engagement while they were in the UK. This breakup marked the beginning of the tragic events that followed.

Amid the turmoil, Sorthi murdered Bhavini at her home. Two hours later, he approached an officer near a police station, claiming he was being framed for the crime. Despite his denial, the court found him guilty, describing the murder as horrific, cruel, and merciless. “You have taken the life of a beautiful, talented young woman, for what?” the judge remarked during sentencing.

Judicial Verdict and Justice Served

Leicestershire Police, who handled the investigation, noted Sorthi’s actions as deliberate and calculated. The court emphasized the severity of his crime, stating that he had disgraced himself by choosing vengeance over reconciliation.

Justice for Bhavini’s family remains a poignant reminder of the tragedy.
