Continuing his tradition of honouring India’s sporting champions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the triumphant Indian women’s cricket team at his residence in New Delhi on Wednesday, November 5, to celebrate their 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup victory.
Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and her teammates shared moments from their thrilling triumph with the Prime Minister, who congratulated them for scripting history and inspiring a new generation of cricketers.
As a token of gratitude, the team presented PM Modi with a special signed jersey bearing the name ‘NaMo 1’, autographed by every member of the squad.
Under Harmanpreet’s leadership, India Women clinched their maiden World Cup title on Sunday, November 2, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a high-scoring final at Navi Mumbai. The victory marked the culmination of years of persistence and heartbreaks for Indian women’s cricket.
Though the Prime Minister could not attend the final, he had lauded the team’s achievement in a social media post, saying that their “remarkable performance has made the entire nation proud.”
Ashwin Lauds Women’s Team’s Gesture to Former Legends
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin hailed the women’s team for their heartfelt tribute to former greats Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Anjum Chopra — presenting them the winner’s trophy on stage after the victory.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin described the act as a “spontaneous gesture of gratitude and humility” and noted that the men’s team had never shown such open appreciation for their predecessors.
“It was a deeply touching moment,” Ashwin said. “Harmanpreet and her team reminded us what true respect looks like. This victory is bigger than just a trophy — it’s about changing perceptions and inspiring the next generation of girls to dream big.”
With this historic win, India’s women cricketers have not only brought glory to the nation but also ignited a new wave of enthusiasm for women’s sports across the country.
