This collaboration highlights the growing emphasis on renewable energy and cross-border power trading as tools to meet energy demands and drive regional development

The successful commencement of this power flow is expected to pave the way for future agreements, reinforcing the shared goals of sustainability and economic cooperation across South Asia
In a significant milestone for regional energy cooperation, Nepal began exporting electricity to Bangladesh through India’s grid on November 15, 2024. This historic event, marking the first-ever trilateral power transaction in the region, was inaugurated virtually by key representatives from the three nations. Shri Manohar Lal, India’s Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Md. Fouzul Kabir Khan, Adviser to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, and Mr. Dipak Khadka, Nepal’s Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, jointly officiated the event.
Under this agreement, Nepal will export up to 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh via the Indian power grid. The initiative reflects a shared vision of advancing regional connectivity in the energy sector and unlocking opportunities for economic integration among the three nations.
The idea of enabling such a transaction was announced during Nepal’s former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’s visit to India in June 2023. Both nations underscored their commitment to enhancing sub-regional cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, to foster economic interconnections for mutual growth. Following this commitment, a tripartite power sales agreement was signed on October 3, 2024, in Kathmandu, involving NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam of India, Nepal Electricity Authority, and Bangladesh Power Development Board.
