As the world observes World Blood Donor Day on June 14, a remarkable grassroots initiative in Dubai led by Indian expatriates is being hailed for saving over 25,000 lives through blood donation drives since 2015. The Kindness Blood Donation Team, founded by Shihab Theruvath, Anwar Wayanad, and Salam Kanyappady, has grown into one of the UAE’s most impactful community-led movements, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

Launched by three Keralite expats in 2015, the initiative now spans 250+ drives and continues to mobilise thousands of donors with the motto: ‘One drop of blood can save a life’.

The team began with small-scale campaigns and expanded its reach using hyperlocal WhatsApp groups to make donating easier for Dubai’s working residents. “We realised people wanted to help, but time and access were challenges,” said Shihab, who works in Dubai’s health sector. “So we brought the drives to them.”

What began as a trio’s mission is now powered by dozens of volunteers from various professions, including graphic designers, document specialists, and limo drivers—all united by a shared commitment to saving lives. Their work has been especially critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, when fear and lockdowns led to a sharp drop in donations. Undeterred, the Kindness team coordinated with Dubai Blood Donation Centre and ensured continued supply under strict safety protocols.

From Pandemic Response to Youth Campaigns, the Mission Grows Stronger

Post-pandemic, the team expanded outreach by partnering with alumni associations, district committees like Dubai KMCC Kasargod, and student groups. Their latest campaign—“Give Blood, Give Hope: Together We Save Lives”—was launched ahead of World Blood Donor Day 2025, encouraging youth involvement and regular donation habits.

The group’s contribution has earned formal recognition. Shihab Theruvath was honoured with a certificate of appreciation by the Dubai Blood Donation Centre, a reflection of the team’s unwavering service.

“Support from the public, especially across nationalities, has been incredible,” said Anwar Wayanad. “Our thanks go to Dubai Health and the amazing volunteers who make this possible.”

Many donors from the group have now progressed to platelet and red cell donation, reflecting the campaign’s growing sophistication and awareness. The group also promotes blood donation education, especially around eligibility and safety standards, in collaboration with UAE health authorities.

Here’s What to Know About Donating Blood in the UAE:

  • Eligibility: Ages 18–65, 50+ kg weight, good general health, valid Emirates ID
  • Temporary Deferrals: Recent travel, flu, dental work
  • Permanent Deferrals: History of malaria, jaundice post-age 11, HIV/hepatitis
  • Impact: 1 unit of blood = 3 lives saved (via red cells, plasma, platelets)

World Blood Donor Day, celebrated globally on June 14 since 2004, commemorates the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the scientist who discovered blood groups, and honours voluntary donors for their life-saving contributions.
