Leh (Ladakh): Police have rescued 100 stranded passengers, including women, and children from the treacherous Changla Axis, officials said, an ANI report in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says.
Rescue operation was launched on Friday evening by police, owing to the significant number of tourists and local passengers requiring assistance.
Besides the UTDRF rescue team of Ladakh Police, the Army and GREEF rescue teams also helped out in the operations. Through their collective efforts, no untoward incidents occurred, and all the passengers were safely evacuated to Leh, police said.
The rescue operation became necessary due to continuous intermittent snowfall over the past two days, resulting in icy and slippery road conditions.
Several vehicles, including taxis and private cars, especially those belonging to tourists, became stuck at Changla Top.
In response to the situation, police team from Kharu and Tangste police posts rushed to Changla Top to rescue and evacuate tstranded passengers, particularly women, children and tourists.
“Those with self-driven cars were transferred to police vehicles and local taxis, that transported them to safer areas. Private vehicles were also safely driven to secure locations with the assistance of local drivers,” police said.
Moreover, priority was given to tourists and children experiencing medical complications, ensuring their timely evacuation towards Leh.
Ladakh Police urged tourists and the public to take serious note of weather advisories and plan their journeys accordingly to ensure safer travel experiences.
Rain, strong winds hit Delhi; IMD predicts more downpour
New Delhi: Meanwhile, another report says rain and gusty winds lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region on Saturday, May 27 bringing down temperature to 19.3 degrees Celsius, seven notches below the season’s average, the weather department said.
Uprooted trees and waterlogging led to traffic snarls in several parts of the city, including the Vasant Vihar-Delhi airport road stretch, the Kanshiram Takkar Marg and the Mahipalpur highway underpass.
Thunderstorm and more downpour have been predicted during the day by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The maximum temperature is likely to settle around 32 degrees Celsius.
The department said a cluster of cloud patches is passing over Delhi-NCR. Under its influence, thunderstorm or dust storm with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with 40-70 kmph speed would continue in Delhi-NCR and its adjoining areas during the next two hours, the IMD said.
The relative humidity was recorded 100 per cent at 8.30 am.
Delhi’s air quality index (aQI) was recorded in the “moderate” category with a reading of 110 at 9 am, Central Pollution Control Board data showed.
an AQI between zero and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “severe”.
Commuters took to Twitter to complain about traffic jams.
On Friday, the maximum temperature in Delhi settled at 34.5 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal.
