Demand rose 32% compared to a regular weekend, cementing long weekends as peak travel windows
The Independence Day long weekend sparked a fresh wave of outbound travel, with Indians turning short breaks into international getaways. Data from visa processing platform Atlys revealed that visa demand jumped by 32% compared to a regular weekend, firmly establishing long weekends as peak travel periods, reported businesstoday.in.
These countries stood out for their easy accessibility, quick flights, and simple visa processes—ideal for last-minute planning. Social media trends also played a role, with Bali cafés, Vietnam bike tours, and Dubai nightlife emerging as popular, share-worthy experiences.
Nearly 60% of visas booked were for short-haul destinations like Bali, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Dubai, and Thailand
The surge was not limited to metro hubs. While Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru led in volumes, tier-2 cities such as Surat, Jaipur, and Mohali saw a 35% rise in visa activity. Millennials drove 57% of the demand, followed by Gen Z at 22%, underscoring how younger demographics are reshaping travel trends.
Atlys’ visa sale added further momentum, lowering costs and encouraging spontaneous trips. Many bookings were directed at long weekend holidays, signalling that international travel is no longer a rare indulgence but an increasingly routine choice.
“Atlys is committed to making international trips as seamless as domestic ones. Indians are no longer waiting months to plan a holiday—a long weekend is now reason enough to cross a border,” said Mohak Nahta, Founder & CEO of Atlys.
The Independence Day travel surge, combined with the strong response to the visa sale, highlights a major mindset shift in how India approaches international holidays.
