A heartfelt Reddit post by a 28-year-old Indian woman working as a software engineer at Google has struck a chord with the diaspora, reigniting the age-old question: Should I move back to India, reported businesstoday.in.

The woman, who moved to the US in 2021 for a Master’s degree, revealed that she had been initially reluctant to leave home.

The decision meant quitting a high-paying job at Apple and parting from her close-knit relationship with her mother during the pandemic.

Torn between two worlds, NRI shares emotional struggle over family, career, and life abroad

Now holding an H-1B visa and living with her Indian boyfriend — a data scientist who wishes to remain in the US — she finds herself conflicted. “Most days I’m content here. But sometimes, I miss home so much… I’m not sure I want to live far away from my family forever,” she wrote, adding that she could transfer to a Google team in India whenever she chooses.

Her post triggered a wave of responses from fellow NRIs sharing their own dilemmas. Some admitted feeling out of place in the US even after years, citing ageing parents as the reason for moving back. Others spoke about returning to India after visa setbacks, highlighting the emotional toll of separation from family.

While some commenters urged her to remain in the US for financial and career growth, many emphasised the unmatched value of being close to family, especially during parents’ later years.
