New York State Senator Jeremy Cooney recently introduced a resolution commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. Proudly embracing his Indian roots, Cooney shared on X that he was adopted from an orphanage in Kolkata and expressed his deep connection to India and its heritage. “As an orphan from Kolkata, India, I’m incredibly proud to celebrate our Indian heritage and this important landmark with my colleagues and all New Yorkers,” he wrote, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

From an Orphanage in Calcutta to the New York State Senate: Cooney’s Journey of Heritage and Hope.

Cooney has openly discussed his birth story, revealing that his birth mother was a lone woman who left him at the International Mission of Hope Society in Kolkata, where he was born anonymously under medical supervision. Later adopted by Anne, a single mother in upstate New York, Cooney became the first Indian male adoptee in the region. Returning to the same orphanage years later with Anne, he honors both his beginnings and his ongoing efforts to maintain strong ties to India and its community.
