In a bid to streamline payment processes for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), ICICI Bank has introduced a novel facility enabling them to utilize their international phone numbers for swift UPI payments. The initiative, unveiled on May 6, is accessible through ICICI’s mobile banking app, ‘iMobile Pay,’ presenting a significant leap in convenience for NRIs, who previously had to register an Indian mobile number for similar transactions.

Sidharatha Mishra, Head of Digital Channels and Partnerships at ICICI Bank, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), stating, “We are delighted to partner with NPCI to launch the UPI facility on international mobile numbers through iMobile Pay. With this facility, our NRI customers residing in 10 countries do not need to switch to an Indian mobile number to pay using UPI.” He highlighted the positive response from NRI customers embracing this innovation, aiming to leverage NPCI’s UPI Infrastructure for global digital payment transformation.

ICICI Bank harnesses NPCI’s framework to extend seamless UPI services to NRIs in ten countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, UAE, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. This advancement empowers NRIs in these nations to effortlessly execute transactions by scanning Indian QR codes and transferring funds to a UPI ID, Indian cellphone number, or bank account.

Step-by-Step Guide for NRIs to Make UPI Payments using ICICI Mobile:

  • Log in to the iMobile app
  • Navigate to ‘UPI Payments’
  • Verify your mobile number
  • Proceed to ‘Manage’ and select ‘My Profile’
  • Generate a new UPI ID
  • Choose the desired account and submit

This innovative feature allows NRIs to manage various payments, including utility bills, merchant services, and online commerce transactions, directly through their international phone numbers linked to their NRE or NRO accounts at ICICI Bank in India.

ICICI Bank’s initiative, announced on Monday, offers NRIs the flexibility to conduct Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions in India using their international mobile numbers, eliminating the need to register an Indian mobile number. This enhancement significantly enhances the ease of everyday payments for NRIs, especially those residing in countries like the USA, UK, UAE, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

The service, available through ICICI’s mobile banking app, iMobile Pay, facilitates utility payments, merchant transactions, e-commerce activities, and other financial transactions seamlessly without necessitating a switch to an Indian mobile number. Customers can initiate payments by scanning Indian QR codes, sending money to a UPI ID, or transferring to an Indian bank account.

Sidharatha Mishra emphasized, “With this facility, our NRI customers residing in 10 countries do not need to switch to an Indian mobile number to pay using UPI.” He reiterated ICICI Bank’s commitment to leveraging NPCI’s UPI infrastructure for enhancing and globalizing the digital payments landscape.
