India has issued a strong advisory urging its nationals to leave Iran immediately, citing a rapidly deteriorating security environment amid prolonged political unrest in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has also cautioned Indian citizens against undertaking any travel to Iran until further notice.

In a fresh statement, the MEA said that in view of ongoing developments and escalating instability, Indian nationals are “once again strongly advised” to avoid travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran. Those currently in Iran—including students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists—have been advised to depart at the earliest using available means of transport, including commercial flights.

  • The advisory marks an escalation from an earlier notice issued earlier this month, which had discouraged non-essential travel and urged Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) in Iran to exercise heightened caution

  • At that time, the MEA had also advised residents on long-term visas to register with the Indian Embassy in Tehran if they had not already done so

The Indian Embassy has reiterated that all nationals should keep their travel and immigration documents, including passports and identity papers, readily accessible at all times. Citizens have also been asked to remain in close contact with the Embassy, avoid areas witnessing protests or demonstrations, and closely monitor local media for updates.

According to official estimates, around 10,000 Indians currently reside in Iran, including a significant number of students. Iran also receives thousands of Indian Shia pilgrims annually, adding to concerns over the safety of visitors amid the unrest. The Embassy in Tehran has activated multiple emergency helplines and an official email channel to assist those seeking support or guidance.

Amid the escalating situation, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a telephonic conversation with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss developments in and around Iran. Jaishankar confirmed the exchange in a social media post, noting that the evolving security scenario was discussed.

The unrest in Iran has intensified as protests against the ruling establishment entered their third week, reportedly triggered by economic grievances including high inflation and currency depreciation. Clashes have been reported across hundreds of locations, with local reports indicating a sharply rising death toll.

Concerns have also been raised by student groups in India, including appeals for evacuation assistance for Indian students stranded in Iran. Meanwhile, the regional situation has drawn international attention, with heightened tensions involving the United States and warnings issued by Iran to neighbouring countries hosting foreign military installations.
