Dialogue focuses on strengthening maritime security and regional cooperation
The 7th India-Japan Maritime Affairs Dialogue was held on April 2, 2025, in Tokyo, further reinforcing the growing strategic cooperation between the two Indo-Pacific partners. The Indian delegation was led by Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary (Disarmament & International Security Affairs), Ministry of External Affairs, while the Japanese side was headed by Kashiwabara Yutaka, Deputy Director-General/Deputy Assistant Minister, Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau.
Focus on maritime security, capacity building and countering illicit maritime activities
During the dialogue, both nations emphasized the need to maintain a secure and stable maritime environment that promotes inclusive economic growth and supports global well-being.
The two sides reviewed current cooperation efforts in the maritime domain and explored new avenues for reinforcing regional and international maritime mechanis
India and Japan agreed to enhance collaboration in key areas such as maritime domain awareness, countering illicit maritime activities (IMA), and capability development and capacity building. These joint efforts aim to ensure freedom of navigation, uphold international law, and foster peace in the Indo-Pacific region.
The two sides also agreed to hold the next round of the Maritime Affairs Dialogue on a mutually convenient date, underscoring the continuity of this vital strategic engagement.
