A Strengthened Bond for a Shared Future
As India and Nigeria chart a new course in their strategic partnership, this visit marks a milestone in diplomatic relations. Both nations aim to prioritize the interests of the Global South and collaborate for the prosperity of their people and the African continent at large
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Nigeria’s highest national honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), during a visit to Abuja on November 17, 2024. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu conferred the prestigious award, making PM Modi the first foreign leader to receive this recognition since Queen Elizabeth in 1969. This marks the 17th international accolade bestowed upon the Indian leader.
PM Modi expressed heartfelt gratitude to Nigeria’s government and people, dedicating the honor to the 1.4 billion citizens of India and the enduring friendship between the two nations. “I accept this honor with humility and respect. This award will inspire us to elevate the India-Nigeria strategic partnership to new heights,” he remarked.
India-Nigeria Partnership: A Shared Vision
During discussions with President Tinubu, PM Modi emphasized the shared values of democracy and diversity that bind the two nations. “Our relations are based on mutual cooperation, goodwill, and respect,” he said. Highlighting similarities between Nigeria’s Renowned Hope Agenda and India’s Viksit Bharat 2047, PM Modi underscored their aligned visions for growth and development.
The two leaders explored ways to enhance cooperation in key sectors, including:
- Economy
- Energy
- Agriculture
- Security
- Fintech
- Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
- Cultural exchange
PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to working closely with Nigeria and Africa, stating, “Nigeria plays a pivotal role in Africa, and strengthening ties with the continent is a high priority for India.”
Global Leadership and Visionary Governance
The citation accompanying the award praised PM Modi’s visionary leadership, recognizing his role in positioning India as a global powerhouse. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, described the honor as a testament to PM Modi’s contributions to fostering unity, peace, and shared prosperity.
PM Modi’s visit to Nigeria, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 17 years, also included discussions on expanding bilateral ties in defense, technology, health, and education. “There is immense potential for growth in these areas, and we are committed to realizing this together,” he stated in a post on social media platform X.
