India-Russia Strengthen Counter-Terrorism and UN Cooperation 13th Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism and 6th Round of UN Consultations Held in Moscow
Shri Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) of India, visited Moscow on December 19-20, 2024, to co-chair the 13th meeting of the India-Russia Joint Working Group (JWG) on Counter-Terrorism (CT) and the 6th round of consultations on United Nations-related issues with Sergey Vershinin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia. High-level officials from various departments and agencies of both countries participated in the discussions.
During the 13th JWG on CT, both nations shared their experiences and best practices in countering terrorism, with a special focus on cross-border terrorism, extremism, and the rise of radicalization and terror financing. The discussions also addressed the growing threats posed by emerging technologies and their misuse for terrorist activities. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working together to enhance counter-terrorism efforts at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
In the consultations on UN-related issues, India and Russia exchanged views on various regional and global developments, especially those concerning the UN Security Council (UNSC). They also discussed the ongoing process of UNSC reform. Russia reiterated its strong support for India’s bid to secure a permanent seat on a reformed UNSC.
Secretary (West) also met with Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin on December 19 to discuss key international and regional issues, with particular attention to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
