India to lead BRICS in 2026 with focus on Global South, sustainability, and people-centric development
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 17th BRICS Summit today in Rio de Janeiro, participating in a key session on “Environment, COP-30 and Global Health.” The discussion brought together BRICS leaders, partner nations, and invited countries to deliberate on pressing global issues.
Thanking Brazil for hosting the crucial session, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that climate change for India is not merely an energy concern but a deep-rooted issue affecting the balance between life and nature.
The prime minister underscored India’s view of climate justice as a moral duty and outlined the country’s landmark initiatives to promote sustainable and inclusive growth
These initiatives include the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Global Biofuels Alliance, International Big Cat Alliance, and the grassroots movement “Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam” (Plant for Mother). He also highlighted Mission LiFE, a lifestyle movement for environment-conscious living.
India Exceeds Climate Goals, Seeks Tech and Finance Support for Developing Nations
Stressing India’s track record of surpassing its Paris Agreement targets, the Prime Minister called for increased technology transfer and accessible climate finance to support developing nations in their ecological efforts. He welcomed the BRICS Framework Declaration on Climate Finance as a step in the right direction.
‘One Earth, One Health’: India Shares Digital Health Success with Global South
Prime Minister Modi elaborated on India’s global health vision, rooted in the “One Earth, One Health” philosophy. Citing India’s success in implementing digital health systems during the COVID-19 pandemic, he offered these technologies to partner countries across the Global South. He also welcomed the adoption of the BRICS Partnership for Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases declaration.
India to Chair BRICS in 2026: A New Vision for a People-Centric BRICS
Looking ahead, Prime Minister announced that India will assume the Chair of BRICS in 2026, and pledged to prioritize the Global South and adopt a “humanity first” approach. He revealed a renewed vision for the bloc, where BRICS would stand for:

He concluded by congratulating Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for successfully hosting the Summit and extended his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to the Indian delegation.
