The Indian government, on January 4, voiced apprehensions regarding reports of Indian residents in Canada receiving alarming “extortion calls,” according to wionews.com.

Addressing concerns at a routine media briefing, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasized the gravity of the situation. “People receiving extortion calls, particularly Indian nationals, is a matter of serious concern,” he stated.

Jaiswal acknowledged existing challenges between India and Canada, citing a recent incident where a temple was attacked. He elaborated, “The Canadian police investigated the temple premises after the attack, and the intruder was later revealed to be of unsound mind. These incidents continue to occur.”

Following a Qatari court’s decision to commute the death sentence of eight Indian nationals, the MEA revealed that a 60-day window had opened for appealing the case in Qatar’s highest court

Local media reports indicate that Canadian law enforcement has established a dedicated task force to investigate extortion cases targeting businesses within the Indo-Canadian community. At least nine incidents are currently under scrutiny.

In his inaugural press conference, MEA spokesperson Jaiswal also addressed the recent developments in the Qatar case. Following a Qatari court’s decision to commute the death sentence of eight Indian nationals, the MEA revealed that a 60-day window had opened for appealing the case in Qatar’s highest court.

Highlighting the significance of the timeframe, Jaiswal stressed, “There is a 60-day window to appeal this issue in the Court of Cassation, which is the highest court in Qatar.” He confirmed that the MEA’s legal team has obtained the confidential court order and is actively exploring the next steps in collaboration with the family members of the affected individuals.
