The move aligns with India’s broader engagement strategy in Africa
India’s strategic focus on East Africa signals a robust trade initiative aimed at fostering stronger economic ties with the region. Spearheaded by Dammu Ravi, Secretary Economic Relations in the Ministry of External Affairs, India is extending its hand of partnership to Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya from April 7-12, 2024. Puneet R Kundal, AS (E&SA), accompanied him.
In Rwanda, Ravi’s presence at the 30th commemoration of the 1994 genocide underscores India’s solidarity while also paving the way for discussions on enhancing bilateral trade. The agenda includeed meetings with Rwandan ministers and officials, emphasizing the potential for collaborative trading partnerships.
Moving to Uganda, Ravi led a 35-member delegation spanning multiple sectors, aiming to amplify trade relations. Engagements with Ugandan government officials and industry leaders, along with a dedicated session for Indian and Ugandan businesses, highlight the commitment to deepening economic bonds.
These consultations highlighted the mutual desire to strengthen bilateral ties across various sectors, including trade, mining, agriculture, and defense
Kenya marked the final leg of Ravi’s East Africa tour, fulfilling agreements made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto in December 2023. With a focus on agricultural cooperation, discussions explored opportunities for Indian investment in Kenya’s farming sector. Ravi engaged in dialogues with Kenyan officials and the local Indian community, reinforcing India’s dedication to nurturing friendships and fostering economic growth in the region.
This concerted effort reflects India’s steadfast commitment to bolstering relationships with Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya.
It also aligns with India’s broader engagement strategy in Africa, as evidenced by the recent India-Democratic Republic of Congo Foreign Office Consultations in in New Delhi on April 10, 2024.
These consultations highlighted the mutual desire to strengthen bilateral ties across various sectors, including trade, mining, agriculture, and defense.
With bilateral trade steadily increasing, both India and the Democratic Republic of Congo are eager to explore new avenues for cooperation, setting the stage for future engagements in Kinshasa.
