India seeks to appeal UK High Court’s decision to prevent the extradition of arms agent Sanjay Bhandari to face charges of money laundering and tax evasion.
Bhandari, a 62-year-old arms agent based in London, is facing charges in India related to money laundering and willfully evading taxes. He is accused of evading Rs 197 crore in taxes by failing to declare foreign assets and income on his Indian Income Tax returns, as per Section 51 of the Black Money Act, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Charges Against Bhandari and the Appeal Process
The Indian government has officially applied to the UK High Court to certify a point of law of general public importance, allowing the country to appeal the extradition ruling of Sanjay Bhandari to the UK’s Supreme Court
According to Indian authorities, Bhandari falsely declared having nil foreign assets between 2012 and 2016, despite amassing Rs 731 crore in foreign assets. The application filed by the Indian government seeks to clarify legal points in the case, which are deemed of public importance. The court is expected to consider these legal issues before allowing the appeal to proceed to the UK’s Supreme Court.
The extradition case has sparked significant interest due to its potential implications on international legal cooperation and India’s efforts to bring financial offenders to justice.
