The Government of India has gifted six school buses to the Government of the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, reinforcing its commitment to global development partnerships. In a ceremonial handover held in Sao Tome on April 10, 2025, the buses were officially presented to  Ms. Isabel Maria Correia Viegas de Abreu, Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Higher Education, by Shri Deepak Miglani, Ambassador of India to Sao Tome and Principe.

India’s gift aims to improve student safety and lower educational costs for families in Sao Tome and Principe

The donation follows a formal request from Sao Tome and Principe, seeking India’s help to strengthen its school transport system.

The gifted buses are expected to enhance student mobility, ensuring safer commutes and easing the financial burden of transportation on families, thereby improving access to education across the island nation.

Earlier this year, in January 2025, India had also extended a helping hand to Sao Tome and Principe’s healthcare system by sending a consignment of essential and life-saving medicines to bolster the country’s medical infrastructure.

India and Sao Tome and Principe continue to nurture close and friendly bilateral relations, with growing cooperation across various sectors.

The gifting of these school buses reflects India’s broader commitment to assisting partner nations in the Global South, as part of its ongoing development partnership initiatives.
